Your Home Birth Team

The midwife on call will be accompanied by one or two trained birth assistants, one of whom is sometimes also a Licensed Midwife. All members of the team are certified in both adult and neonatal resuscitation. The team carries oxygen, resuscitation equipment, emergency medications, antibiotics, IV fluids and equipment for monitoring mother and baby's well being. The team will be with you throughout active labor and until between 3 and 6 hours after birth.
In addition, all families planning home or birth center births are encouraged to retain the services of a doula, and undertake comprehensive, independent childbirth education during their pregnancy. These important tools have been proven to optimize the chances that you will successfully birth your baby how and where you want to. |

Safety of Home Birth

.Your safety and that of your baby are our most important concerns. The best evidence available shows that home or birth center birth with a trained midwife is as safe or safer than hospital birth for healthy, low-risk people.
Furthermore women report greater satisfaction with their care and birth with fewer interventions. When Plans Change

Sometimes events in labor necessitate a change of plans and a transport must be facilitated. Transports can occur during labor or in the hours immediately following a birth.
In almost all cases, there are warning signs which occur before a problem develops, allowing for non-urgent transfer to a hospital for higher level care in your own car. Examples of reasons why a transport could be necessary include maternal exhaustion and/or request for pain medications (as in the case of a first time mom with a long labor), or if the cervix isn't dilating properly. In a small number of cases a call to 911 is needed and an urgent transport by ambulance occurs. Very rarely a problem occurs without warning which would require immediate care or assistance not available in the home setting. In these situations there is no guarantee that being in a hospital would save mother or baby, but it might make a difference. Families choosing home or birth center birth must be aware of and be willing to accept these risks. |
